"Penumbras refers to the color change that occurs along the border of an object that partially obscures the light source, such as when trees are silhouetted against the sky."                                                                                                            ~ Chris Kolupski

This sounds complicated, but Chris showed us how to see penumbras and get more depth in our paintings.

FEBRUARY 10, 2016    Torrell Arnold: Looking for the Abstract
Artist Statement:
Lately I attribute the creative process to observing a plastic ant farm. Kitschy romantic metaphors about trudging small tunnels into the unknown depths of the un explored dirt under a rock. Actively keeping a sketch book; there are exciting aspects to storing away techniques in little seemingly dead end caverns. My work in the last year or so is about unearthing these fruitful experiments. I have been exploring color and pattern and repetition of symbolism that seems to re appear over and over in my sketch book. What remains constant about what I create are always things that I just find enjoyable to make and to repeat. I could say some thing like ant farms are about collective harvesting and existing behind a collective screen/plastic case of contemporary culture but this show isn’t necessarily a through thesis statement as much as its just a glimpse at the studies and ideas that have mused me as of late.

March 9, 2016    Peggy Martinez:
Possibilities - ways to increase creativity

The artist started painting again while raising a family as a single parent in 1997, where she attended a workshop with Zoltan Szabo and fell in love with watercolors. Peggy was born in Rochester, NY in 1961. She later moved to Salinas, Puerto Rico in 1971 with her family. She attended Kutztown College in Kutztown, Pa, where she took courses in Fine Art. In 1981 her family moved back to Rochester, NY. She currently lives in Chili, NY, a quiet suburb of Rochester with her husband and daughter Rebecca. In addition, she has two daughters, Jasmine and Francesca and a grandson Xavier. After many years of working in Banking, she decided to leave the Corporate world and pursue her passion for art on a full time basis.
Peggy is a self-taught artist and has participated in many workshops with local and nationally established artist, such as, Zoltan Zsabo, Tom lynch, Arleta Pech, Susan Webb-Tregay, Don Andrews, Don Getz and Lian Quan Zeng.  The artist is affiliated with the Webster Art Club, as past Treasurer and workshop organizer as well as a member of the Rochester Art Club. July 13, 2016     Jan Davidson paints in encaustics
Jan is an artist who paints and draws in many mediums. Her latest love is encaustics, an ancient medium thousands of years old with examples still in existence.  The encaustics are wax plus a resin. each layer must be fused with a heat gun. Paper, dried materials, photos and almost anything can be added as long as they are coated with clear wax to seal and fused. Colored wax can be painted on to add detail. The waxes come in a range of colors and some are iridescent or metallic. An exciting old medium given a modern update.

August 10, 2016     Zentangles or Zendoodles?
Anne McCune and Colette Savage both do similar pieces, but Anne calls her work Zentangles and Colette calls hers Zendoodles.  The difference is in the approach.  Zentangles use patterns and designs which were developed in California.  The artist is free to develop and use these in any way they please, but they still retain the formal Zentangle foundation.  Zendoodles on the other hand are freer in approach.  Starting with a free form line that develops into shapes, Colette then fills in the shapes using repetitive patterns.  She looks for something form nature, a snail, mushroom or flower and then develops the image.  Both are meditative and relaxing.  A fun activity.
